Teams calling is an alternative to traditional and VoIP telephone systems that leverages of your existing investment in the Microsoft suite of applications. Teams calling enables end users to make calls to landlines or mobiles directly from the Microsoft Teams Application. It is a truly unified workspace experience for contacts, messaging, document sharing, presence and meetings.
Teams calling provides you a feature rich Unified Communications platform without the cost of expensive hardware. By moving the smarts to the cloud you are not bound by location and can effectively make phone calls from anywhere in the world as well as much more.
Microsoft Teams allows for audio/video meetings and instant messaging but does not connect you to the phone networks (landlines/mobile phones) the Calling functionality allows your Teams Application to connect to the PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network – AKA a phone line) and also the Mobile network so you can send and receive phone calls from anywhere directly to your Microsoft Teams Application.
If you are in Australia you need to have a Microsoft 365 Subscription (Includes Teams Application), Microsoft 365 Phone System License (backend smarts for the phone system) and Telstra Teams Calling Plan (allows call routing from Microsoft 365 Teams to the PSTN (landline) and Mobile networks). Please see full licensing details in this download.
The Teams Calling Phone System is Microsoft’s technology for enabling phone calls to the PSTN (landline) and mobile networks using Private Branch Exchange (PBX) capabilities in the Microsoft 365 cloud with Microsoft Teams. A traditional phone system is Private Branch Exchange (PBX) hardware in a building that is bound by location and allows for sending/receiving phone calls to the PSTN (landline) and mobile networks.
The beauty of a cloud based phone system is you don’t have to have a specialised network segment for this. If you are a larger site it might make sense to segment traffic if you LAN equipment has the capability. We review your network capability as part of our readiness assessment.
If you already have an internet connection and LAN (Local Area Network) swithc with ethernet ports to plug into then the only additional equipment you would need is end user based. Deskphone, Headset or Mobile Handsets are all ways the Teams Calling system can operate.
You need a valid Microsoft Plan as well as valid Telstra Teams Calling plan to operate Teams Calling. You can confirm your requirements with this link.
For a number of our customers the move to Teams has worked out cheaper to run that their previous set up. The key benefits is that you can use your existing Microsoft 365 licensing and just add on the Teams Phone System and Teams Calling Plan so can be relatively inexpensive as apposed to an on premise system. We can provide you with a bill review to determine this for you.
Microsoft licensing can be purchased on a month to month basis but does attract a 20% increase in cost above the standard MSR pricing. Telstra Teams Calling Licenses can be increased/decreased on a month to month basis with no additional charges.
Teams calling is comparable to the quality achieved by other phone solutions available today, like all solutions the quality of your connection to the Internet, the quality of your device and the quality of your recipients calling can all play a part in modern telephony. As part of our proposals we confirm your network quality before proceeding to order. You can do this yourself by running the Microsoft Teams Network Assessment Tool in this link.
Teams is highly scalable and suitable for a small business with a handful of end users right up to hundreds of thousands of end points. Microsoft use it globally and has been part of the Telstra offering for over 2 years now with enhancements being made all the time. If you want a truly extensible phone system then Teams Calling is second to none.
